Thanksgiving Wine: Sweet, Sassy, and Sensational

Kopke 20-Year-Old White Port

This white Port is not your average white Port, ie., the kind used in a spritz cocktail. This one is the crème de la crème of the category, meant for slowly sipping and savoring.

Kopke is the oldest Port wine House, established in 1638.

At first glance, you might think this Port is a tawny, based on the amber color and rich oxidative style, but white Port is made from white grapes, not red. However, white Port does have many similarities to tawny Port, starting with as its production from native varieties grown in Portugal’s Douro region. Likewise, it is fortified with brandy and aged in wooden barrels, in this case, 20 years. The lengthy aging is what gives the wine its beautiful amber hue.

Tasting Notes

Fantastic! A complex nose of raisins, honey-baked apple, caramelized almonds, and candied ginger. On the multi-layered palate, you’ll find toffee, fig, lemon curd balsamic, and candied orange rind. Sweet, but not syrupy with 109 grams per liter of residual sugar, this white Port is well-balanced by a good amount of acidity and has a dry finish with nutty, herbal, and bright citrus notes.

This captivating dessert wine pairs well with cheese and not-too-sweet desserts like a raspberry tart or dark chocolate cake. Serve chilled and bask in the smiles surrounding you.

Kopke 20-year-old white Port retails for about $50 for a half bottle and $120 for a full-sized (750 ml).
