A Pacific Northwest Rosé Duo That’s Hard to Resist
/Back in 2017, I went to Washington State on my very first press trip, and ever since, I’ve had a soft spot for the wines from this beautiful, vineyard-rich state. The wild landscapes, the passionate growers, and that signature freshness in the glass—it all stuck with me.
I’m also a big fan of Oregon wine (Pinot Noir, please!), so I was instantly intrigued when I received an offer to sample two rosés from Portlandia Winery, which is based in Oregon but also sources fruit from Washington’s Columbia Valley. Made from 100% Washington State-grown Syrah, a grape that shines there, both rosés overdeliver for the price.
Let’s start with the one that really wowed me: the Portlandia Sparkling Rosé. Made in the traditional method, it’s a steal at around $20. The tiny bubbles are refined, the first sip is subtle—think stewed strawberries with a touch of something darker—but its magic lies in the finish. It’s earthy and savory, with depth and complexity. This is a wine that takes itself seriously but still wants you to have fun.
The 2024 Portlandia Columbia Valley Rosé is a delight too: vibrant, juicy, and packed with red berry aromas. The palate is bright and fruity with a saline edge, and there’s a pleasant, slightly bitter snap on the finish that keeps you coming back. At 12.5% ABV, it’s the perfect chill-and-pour bottle for a beach day, a backyard hang, or just a solo unwind session with snacks.
The labels, made from recycled paper, are as cute as the wines are delicious. Simple, playful, and perfect for a summer table.

Food-Friendly Duo
I paired the sparkling rosé with hake drizzled with a basil-mint sauce, along with roasted potatoes and asparagus. In a word: delicious!
For a great pre-dinner apéritif, I enjoyed the still rosé with a plate of 1,000-day-aged Gouda cheese, Thai lime & chili cashews, and green Bella di Cerignola olives (thank you, Trader Joe’s!).
Who says you need to look to France for great rosé? The Pacific Northwest is clearly in the conversation, and at a price that’s hard to beat.
