Sicily, Day 6: Grillo in 300 Words or Less

My Favorite Sicilia DOC White Wine

Today I would like to introduce you to one of Sicily’s top white grapes, Grillo. If you’ve never had a wine made from it, I highly recommend finding one to try. Historically, Grillo was famous for its role in the island's fortified Marsala wines (which hail from Sicily’s western side), but these days the grape variety is planted all over the island and is used to make dry white wines.

Grillo makes crisp wines with bright acidity. They can range from savory in style with a citrusy, herbal aspect reminiscent of Sauvignon Blanc to a style with more tropical notes: fruity with aromas of pineapple and melon. Either way, they easily pair with various possibilities, especially seafood, cheeses, egg preparations, arancini (fried rice balls), and white meats.

And believe me, I’ve had Grillo with all that and more on my whirlwind Sicilian wine and food adventure.

Buonanotte, Good night!
