If you’re not familiar with Finger Lakes wines, Thanksgiving is a perfect time to try them. In addition to supporting U.S. wines on this most American of holidays, you will be pleasantly surprised how well they go with both white and dark turkey meat, and all the fixings. These wines are typically lower in alcohol, making them great partners with food; they bring freshness and acidity to the table, rather than the heaviness so often found in those with higher alcohol.

The Finger Lakes region, located in upstate New York, is full of passionate grape growers and winemakers drawn to the area’s unique set of growing conditions. The landscape consists of scenic vine-covered hills that slope towards 11 long, narrow lakes. Most of the vineyards surround the four deepest ones: Canandaigua, Keuka, Seneca, and Cayuga; the lakes provide a moderating effect that keeps the grape safe throughout the freezing cold winters, but also during hot summer days.

Additionally, the ancient soils of the region, rich in shale and loam, promote the wines’ minerality, a quality that, when combined with delectable fruit and firm acids results in wines of beautiful texture and invigorating acidity — perfect for your Thanksgiving table.

And, while Riesling is the calling card of the Finger Lakes wine region, the area also produces fantastic sparkling and red wines. Here are six Finger Lakes wines that should adorn your holiday table.

Note: If you have trouble finding any of these wines, don’t hesitate to pick another one. There are many excellent producers in the Finger Lakes (see my list further below).

SPARKLING

As in France’s Champagne region, the cool climate of the Finger Lakes makes the region ideal for the production of sparkling wines.

  • Dr Konstantin Frank 2014 Blanc de Blancs. The winery, founded in the 1950s, was the first Finger Lakes winery to make a traditional method sparkling wine using vinifera grapes (often called the “European grape,” and considered the best kind for winemaking). A great value for the price, the wine is exceptionally crisp and clean with notes of tart green apple, pear, lemon, and lime, with a slight toastiness. This is a wine that can be enjoyed throughout the whole meal, and especially with a sweet dessert like pecan pie. ($29.99)

  • Boundary Breaks Bubbly Dry #356. A mouthwateringly bright, low-alcohol sparkling wine. Made from 100% Riesling and fermented dry, its tiny, light bubbles add refreshment without being aggressive. A perfect choice with rich, buttery cheeses. Curious what #356 is? It refers to the clone of Riesling that is used to make the wine. ($19.99)

WHITE

RIESLING - From bone dry to lusciously sweet, and with an invigorating acidity, Finger Lakes Rieslings offer a full spectrum of tastes and textures. Here are two wines — one dry, the other slightly sweet — that will liven up your holiday meal.

  • Lakewood Vineyards 2016 3 Generations Dry Riesling. This crisp, dry Riesling is bursting with notes of green apples, pears, grapefruit and lemon. Fruit-forward without being too fruity, this winning white wine is sure to please everyone at your Thanksgiving table. ($15)

  • Hermann J. Wiemer 2019 Semi-Dry Riesling. Marked by floral aromas and hints of peaches, apricots and honey, the wine’s well-balanced acidity tempers the sugars, resulting in a subtly sweet wine; one that’s enjoyable on its own, but comes to life with rich, full-flavored foods. ($19.99)

RED

While Riesling has garnered most of the Finger Lake’s attention, Cabernet Franc and Pinot Noir are getting noticed as distinguished ambassadors of the Finger Lakes red wines.

  • Lamoreaux Landing 2017 Cabernet Franc. Because of its earthy flavor, soft tannins and bright acidity, Finger Lakes Cabernet Franc is the perfect match for turkey and all the holiday fixings. This energetic wine is loaded with flavors of fresh cherry and strawberry, along with subtle oaky notes and a peppery spiciness. This refreshing red wine promises to keep your thirst at bay. ($19.99)

  • Damiani Wine Cellars 2017 Pinot Noir. A grape that thrives in cooler climates, Pinot Noir has found a home in the Finger Lakes. This slightly smoky wine is light on its feet, with tart fresh cherry flavors and a pure and mineral focus. ($22.99)
