Three New Bourgogne Wineries That Are Succeeding Against All Odds

Did you know that in Bourgogne (Burgundy), the price of one single acre of vineyard land starts at $70,000 and can get up into the millions? In the renowned Côtes d'Or, costs per acre in 2020 averaged a whopping $7 million, marking a 4% increase from the previous year.

With such pricing, it's challenging, to say the least, for newcomers to the region to establish wineries—unless, of course, they inherit vineyards or have substantial financial backing. Nonetheless, success stories are not unheard of, and there is a small, daring group of people who are able to navigate the complicated process of finding, buying, and establishing new wineries.

These newcomers prove that where there's a will, there's a way. During a visit to this storied region, sponsored by the Bourgogne Wine Board (BIVB), I met three young winery owners who are making their mark. They’re bringing fresh energy, innovation, and a deep appreciation for the environment.

If you're passionate about wine and appreciate the dedication it takes to create something special, these winemakers are the ones to watch.

Read about them in my article on Grape Collective, and find out why this historic French wine region is not using the word Burgundy anymore: Next-Gen Bourgogne Winemakers Thriving Without Inherited Vineyards.
