Sipping Your Way Through December—Day 18

When it comes to the holiday table, bubbles are an essential ingredient. From appetizers to dessert, Champagne can lift the mood and make even the simplest gathering feel like a celebration. And with New Year’s Eve just a couple of weeks away, this is exactly the moment to have a bottle (or two or three!) of something special at the ready.

Piper-Heidsieck Brut Rosé (SRP $74) is a classic blend of 50% Pinot Noir (including 15% still red wine), 25% Chardonnay, and 25% Meunier. Lively and elegant, it pours a festive salmon-pink hue and delivers fresh flavors of red berries (wild strawberries and raspberries) with a touch of citrus zest, supported by crisp acidity and fine, energetic bubbles. It’s a perfect welcome drink, but it can also be served throughout the meal, as it pairs well with everything from smoked salmon and roast chicken to charcuterie, soft cheeses, and more.

Beyond what’s in the glass, Piper-Heidsieck has a history that’s just as exciting as the wine itself. A few highlights worth knowing (and sharing at the table):

  • A Champagne fit for royalty. Founder Florens-Louis Heidsieck set out to create a cuvée “worthy of a queen.” In 1785, he presented his first Champagne to none other than Queen Marie-Antoinette (rumors have it he was trying to seduce her!).

  • A family story. After Florens-Louis’ death, his nephew, Christian Heidsieck, partnered with businessman Henri-Guillaume Piper to expand the house internationally. Following Christian’s death, Piper married his widow (there may be more to the story here!), and in 1838, the Champagne house became Piper-Heidsieck.

  • A Hollywood favorite. Piper-Heidsieck was the Champagne of choice for Marilyn Monroe, who reportedly had it delivered by the case, cementing the house’s glamorous, cinematic reputation.

With its bright personality, storied past, and celebratory feel, Piper-Heidsieck Brut Rosé deserves a spot on the table during the holiday festivities.
