Quinta Nova Reserva Terroir 2023
Today’s wine comes from the heart of Portugal’s Douro Valley, where vines grow on dramatic, steep terraces overlooking the Douro River. This striking region is known for its beauty and sweet Port wines, but it also produces terrific dry white and red wines, ranging from light and crisp to deep, intense, and full-bodied.
Quinta Nova Reserva Terroir 2023 (SRP $35.99) is a big, bold, dry red wine. When I poured it into my glass, I was immediately struck by its color: inky purple, dense and saturated. The aromas and taste were equally intriguing: ripe black fruit, dark berries, a touch of spice, and earthy depth. This is a juicy wine that delivers richness and intensity while staying fresh and balanced.
Quinta Nova is owned by the Amorim family, whose aim is to produce wines that express the character of the land. Their Reserva Terroir is a perfect example of that philosophy. A blend of four traditional Portuguese grapes, it is aged in both French oak barrels and cement tanks, which adds structure while preserving purity and energy.
This generous red wine is made for food and pairs well with grilled or roasted meats, such as lamb chops or a simply prepared steak. It’s equally at home with slow-braised dishes, mushroom-driven plates, or aged cheeses—its structure and lively acidity handling richness with ease.
And for those who want to experience this spectacular place firsthand, the Quinta Nova estate also includes a beautiful Relais & Châteaux property overlooking the vines.
